Main entrance to CCU now blocked, must enter from SC 544

The main entrance into Horry-Georgetown Technical College and Coastal Carolina University will be modernized this summer.

Horry County’s first roundabout will be built on University Boulevard, the entry way into the two campuses. After numerous incidents, the campuses decided on a roundabout as the best method to slow traffic and offer additional safety to students, faculty and staffs, as well as persons interacting with the educational institutions.

A roundabout is a circular intersection where traffic flows around a center island and is often used in place of stop signs or traffic signals. Roundabouts have been shown to decrease the number of accidents and to improve pedestrian safety.

Thomas-Hutton has been hired to design and manage the project. The firm says that the construction will require a limited closing of University Boulevard as of May 31. University Boulevard will reopen on Tuesday, Aug. 3 after a morning ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The road will be closed from U.S. 501 to CCU Student Health Services on the east side of the CCU campus. From U.S. 501, motorists will not be permitted to turn onto University Boulevard during construction. From East Chanticleer Drive, motorists will not be able to access U.S. 501; however, Student Health Services will be accessible.

HGTC may be entered at the intersection of U.S. 501 and Singleton Ridge Road. From U.S. 501, take the second right at Jiffy Lube to enter the campus. Motorists can exit HGTC using the same routing or may exit from Victory Lane.

There are several options for entering Coastal Carolina University:

• Motorists traveling from Conway or the Surfside Beach area should enter CCU from S.C. 544 at University Blvd. near Brooks Stadium.

• Motorists traveling from Myrtle Beach on U.S. 501 should turn left at Singleton Ridge Road, travel to S.C. 544 and turn right, then travel to University Boulevard and enter near Brooks Stadium.

• Motorists traveling from Conway on U.S. 501 may also turn right at Singleton Ridge Road, travel to S.C. 544 and turn right, then travel to University Blvd. and enter near Brooks Stadium.
