CCU hosts 18th triathlon

Eighty-nine participants competed in Coastal Carolina University’s 18th annual triathlon, a benefit for Relay For Life held April 19. The event was open to students, faculty and staff, as well as the general public.

The race was a sprint triathlon consisting of a 300-yard swim, an 11-mile bike and a 3.1-mile run.

John Curwen, a CCU alumnus from Bluffton, finished first overall with a time of 52:53. Cara Walker, a teaching associate in school of health, kinesiology and sport studies from Conway, finished first in women competition with a time of 1:03:24. The North Myrtle Beach Triathlon Club finished first in team relay competition with a time of 1:03:47.

The swim was held in the CCU Recreation Center pool. Fastest swim times included Curwen with 3:49; Elyse Venne (women) from Southborough, Mass., with 4:45; and Moving Forward (team) with 4:16.

The bike course ran across campus into Quail Creek neighborhood for an out and back loop. Upon exiting the Quail Creek neighborhood, cyclists continued around the Coastal campus for two laps before finishing. Fastest bike times were clocked by Lee Williams from Camden with 25:49; Walker (women) with 30:13; and North Myrtle Beach Triathlon Club (team) with 30:08.

The run course was a 5K, consisting of the same path as the first portion of the bike course. Fastest run times included Cris Kitzler from Myrtle Beach with 19:08; Walker (women) with 24:41; and North Myrtle Beach Triathlon Club (team) with 23:32.
