I Spy: Alisha Singleton: a Chanticleer helping Chanticleers

by Hanks

Alisha Singleton, cash auditor in Coastal Carolina University’s Office of Student Accounts, has bled teal for a little longer than a decade now.

As a self-proclaimed Air Force brat, Singleton lived all over the world in places such as Germany, Oklahoma, Nevada and Arizona before moving to Little River in 2000. In 2004, Coastal Carolina University became her forever home as she began her college career.

CCU had a special spot in her heart from the very beginning. Originally a major in art studio, Singleton found a passion for history her sophomore year and turned her two favorite areas of study into double majors. She also met her future husband, Josh, during her time at CCU. Both graduated from the University in 2008.

She knew early on that she wanted to work at her alma mater. Her full-time job experience at BB&T bank prepared her for a cashier position in the Office of Student Accounts that became available in 2012. Since then, Singleton has often been recognized for her hard work and recently received a promotion to cash auditor.

The Office of Student Accounts accepts and processes payments for tuition or other student fees, as well as money from University departments.

“We have other offices on campus like student activities or the Wheelwright Box Office that will come to us and deposit money,” said Singleton.

While the cashiers receipt the money, cash auditor Singleton verifies their transactions, checking to make sure everything is correct before depositing the money in the bank. The bank statements are then transferred to financial services.

According to Singleton, there is never a dull moment in the Office of Student Accounts. While it can get hectic, the office staff always makes time to have some fun. Singleton and her colleagues love to dress up and show their CCU spirit during events like Homecoming Week and Halloween. In past years, they’ve dressed up like the “Despicable Me” minions, characters from “The Wizard of Oz” and, most recently, “Where’s Waldo.”

Singleton said her favorite thing about CCU is most definitely the people she gets to work with in the offices of student accounts and student activities and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), as well as other departments around campus.

“I really enjoy building relationships with different people,” she said. “We have a great group in our office, and I love them all.”

When not working, Singleton sings in the praise band at her church, Grace Church in Loris, and she volunteers for vacation Bible school. While she does not have any children of her own, she is an aunt to four rambunctious boys: Isaac, 10; Beven, 6; Jonah, 4; and Townes, 1, who live in Nichols.

“Being an aunt is probably the most fun thing. You get to love them, spoil them, and then at the end of the day you get to give them back to their mom,” she said.

Singleton and husband Josh, assistant director of parks and recreation for the city of Loris, not only love to support her nephews at their various sporting events, but they also cheer on the Chants at football games and other sporting events as active members of the CCU Alumni Association.

“We try to go to all the different events they have in the area and on campus, especially the sporting events,” she said. “We’re always at football and basketball games.”

When she does have time to spare, Singleton enjoys going to the beach, playing with her toy poodle, Scooter, and cuddling up with a good book, usually a mystery novel or a biography to appease the history major in her.

This is Singleton’s second nomination for I Spy, the employee recognition program whereby CCU employees can nominate staff and faculty members for outstanding performance. Singleton was previously nominated in May 2015 by Lisa Rickenbrode of OLLI and most recently by Ellen Jampole of the Office of Executive Development and Continuing Education.

“Alisha is gregarious, always calm, cheerful, perky and can over the telephone walk us through any problem we have with a student’s account,” said Jampole. “She embodies both the CCU mission statement and Feel the Teal [customer service initiative.] Alisha is productive, engaged and has a great deal of integrity.”

Singleton insists she just tries to help her fellow Chanticleers.

“You just try and help people in the best way you can, and you don’t expect anything back from it,” she said. “Being recognized for it is very flattering.”
