Summer updates on campus construction projects
Summer is a busy time for sprucing up campus and for completing building projects. Here’s an update on construction projects at Coastal Carolina University.
Science II is now open for business, and summer classes are being held in the new, 71,150-square-foot annex building. Some advisers have already moved in as well.
The last two residence halls – CINO and Teal halls – located in the newest residential community behind the HTC Center, are completed and ready for August move-in. They mirror the first two, Chanticleer and Tradition halls, which opened Fall 2015. The buildings have 1,274 beds for first-year students, with apartments for professional, live-in staff, as well as professional offices, reception and meeting spaces, and a separate outdoor pavilion.
Construction should start on the sand volleyball complex later this month. The complex, which will be located next to the tennis courts on Allied Drive on east campus, will include five courts and an area for a scoreboard and lights.
The University Place Dining Hall has expansion plans that include renovation of the existing activity center area to provide a new kitchen and new service area with hot and cold food for UP residents. Bidding for the project goes out in the fall.
Two major campus roads are being repaved. Chanticleer Drive and Founders Drive has had the old asphalt removed by a milling process, then new base material will be installed, and then new asphalt will be laid. Once complete this summer, there will be interior driving lanes and four-foot bike lanes along Chanticleer Drive.
An intersection speed table will be installed at University Boulevard and Chanticleer Drive East (near Wheelwright and Baxley Hall over to the Lackey Chapel Lot KK). It will be similar to the one that is at University Boulevard and University Drive (near Lackey Chapel). This one will be concrete, and there won’t be any pavers installed like the other one.
Also on University Boulevard, traffic signal improvements are being made, consisting of new signal equipment, controller upgrades, reprogramming and signal timing, phasing changes and incidentals, including striping and detection loops.
The E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration is undergoing renovation on the third floor, with the tiered classrooms getting new carpet, sound panels, ITS cabling, painting, new tiered seats and backs, and regular chairs.
The new Academic and Office Building II is coming along as well. When completed, this will be a 53,000-square-foot building. Located adjacent to the Wall College of Business Administration, it will provide 15 to 18 classrooms and approximately 100 faculty and administrative staff offices. The building will be completed in 2017.
Renovation of the Singleton Building should be substantially completed by Aug. 17, with final completion set for Sept. 16. Interior spaces have been reconfigured, a ballroom has been added to the first floor, two elevators have been added, asbestos has been removed and the HVAC system has been replaced.
The Wave Simulation Tank in the Coastal Science Center is being installed in the old print shop. The 65-foot wave tank is waiting on delivery of a pump and tanks, which should be delivered in July.
