Science II and Singleton are nearly finished
July means it’s time to update the various construction projects at Coastal Carolina University.
Roadwork: The repaving of Chanticleer and Founders drives should be completed this month. An intersection speed table has been installed at University Boulevard and Chanticleer Drive East near Wheelwright and Baxley Hall over to the Lackey Chapel Lot KK. It is similar to the one at University Boulevard and University Drive near Lackey Chapel. Once completed this summer, there will be inside driving lanes and four-foot bike lanes along Chanticleer Drive.
Traffic signals: Also on University Boulevard, traffic signal improvements were made, consisting of new signal equipment, controller upgrades, reprogramming and signal timing, striping and detection loops.
Wall Building: By July, the third-floor renovation of the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration building should be complete. Painting has been completed in the Coastal Science Center, Prince and Humanities buildings. Work at Residence Life and University Place included heat pump replacements, water heaters, painting, some new flooring and a new roof on one of the buildings.
Science II is now open for business, and summer classes are being held in the new, 71,150-square-foot annex building. The architect continues evaluating the building and creating punch lists for the general contractor to complete. Touchup painting continues in certain areas of the building. The simulated cross-section of the ocean floor painting and wall covering is still waiting on the fabric covering to be installed. Cleaning continues in some areas of the building. Sod and plantings will be added around the bridge entrance to the site. The parking lot is being cleaned up. General adjustments and touchups are being completed.
Bids went out June 30 for the renovation on the Smith Science Building. The existing building is 40,352 square feet. A two-story entry addition of 328 feet will be constructed as part of this project for total square feet of 40,680. Following the renovation, the physics, mathematics and psychology departments will be accommodated.The spaces include teaching labs, classrooms, tutoring areas, office space and support spaces such as storage and conference rooms.The office space will accommodate 68 staff/faculty plus adjuncts, and there are 13 labs/classrooms.
The last two residence halls – CINO and Teal halls – located in the residential community behind the HTC Center, are completed and ready for August move-in. The buildings mirror the first two, Chanticleer and Tradition halls, which opened Fall 2015. The buildings have 1,274 beds for first-year students, with apartments for professional, live-in staff, as well as professional offices, reception and meeting spaces, and a separate outdoor pavilion.
Volleyball complex: Construction should start on the sand volleyball complex later this month. The complex, which will be located next to the tennis courts on Allied Drive on east campus, will include five courts and an area for a scoreboard and lights. In addition to the courts, there’ll also be referee stands, nets, posts, antennas and boundary poles, concrete sidewalks, synthetic turf, new fencing, windscreens and conduits for future lights, drainage and perimeter irrigation
The University Place Dining Hall has expansion plans that include renovation of the existing activity center area to provide a new kitchen and new service area with hot and cold food for UP residents. Bidding for the project goes out in the fall. Construction begins Sept. 19, with completion estimated for Aug. 7, 2017.
The new Academic and Office Building II currently under construction will be a 53,000-square-foot facility. Located adjacent to the Wall College of Business Administration, it will provide 15 to 18 classrooms and approximately 100 faculty and administrative staff offices. The building will be completed in May 2017.
Renovation of the Singleton Building should be substantially completed by Aug. 17, with final completion set for Sept. 16. Interior spaces have been reconfigured, a ballroom has been added to the first floor, two elevators have been added, asbestos has been removed and the HVAC system has been replaced. Final completion is scheduled for Sept. 16.
