Waccamaw Elementary fifth-graders taught to make informed choices

Chauncey, University Counsel Tim Meacham and Assistant Counsel Katherine Brooks joined 15th Circuit Solicitor Jimmy Richardson recently at the Waccamaw Elementary School gymnasium where they urged about 100 fifth graders to stay in school, avoid drugs and stay out of the criminal justice system.

The visit was part of Project LEAD, a law-related educational program that teaches fifth-grade students about the criminal justice system. Taught by volunteer facilitators, the project strives to prepare students to make the right choices in life so they don’t end up in the justice system.

Project LEAD was started in 1993 in the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and has touched the lives of thousands of children across the country. As a result of that success, Richardson implemented the program in Horry and Georgetown County schools in 2016.

Chauncey, CCU’s mascot, handed out CCU T-shirts to the children.
