Updating CCU construction projects
Here’s an update on several new and completed construction projects around campus.
The track and field facility: The existing rubber track surface is being replaced with a new rubber surface, and the asphalt is being repaired as needed around the track. Running lanes for the field events – long/triple jump, javelin and pole vault runways – will also be replaced. The work will begin after the track season ends in late May or early June. Once underway, the project will take about eight weeks, according to Rein Mungo, director of facilities, planning and management.
Academic Office/Classroom Building II: June is the completion date for the new office and classroom building located adjacent to the Wall Building. The building is similar to Brittain Hall and will be 53,000 square feet, house 100 faculty and administration offices, and include 15 to 18 classrooms with 25 to 35 seats each.
Smith Science Building renovation: A two-story, 328 square-foot entryway addition being added to the Smith Science Building will bring the total square footage to 40,680 when complete. The newly renovated building will accommodate the departments of physics, mathematics and psychology. The department space will include teaching labs, classrooms, tutoring areas, offices and support spaces, such as storage and conference rooms. There will be 68 staff and faculty plus adjuncts, and there will be 13 classrooms/labs. Substantial completion is expected by the end of August.
Crosswalk from Chanticleer Drive West into Quail Run Village: The intersection of University Boulevard and Chanticleer Drive West going into Quail Run Village has a new concrete speed table with ramps, crosswalk markings and new concrete sidewalks.
Brooks Stadium expansion: The first phase of expanding the football stadium will increase seating capacity from about 9,200 seats to 15,000 to comply with NCAA rules when transferring to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and should be completed by fall 2017 in time for foortball season. The second phase will add about 5,000 seats in 2018. Once the project is bid and contracts signed, construction will begin.
New Soccer Complex: The design and construction of a new soccer stadium includes bleacher seating, playing field, stadium lights, team facility, restrooms, concessions and parking. The complex will be located in the Atlantic Center on the east campus adjacent to the Stevens Tennis Complex.
Once the board of trustees approves the project, approval from the state fiscal accountability authority must be given, according to Mungo, then the project will be bid and a starting date set, hopefully no later than fall.
New gated bridge: A gate has been installed on the walking bridge behind the Woods Residence Hall community. The bridge is used regularly by students living in surrounding communities in the College Park area to walk to and from campus. The gate is locked daily from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. as a safety measure, and anyone attempting to access the bridge during those hours could face University policy violations or criminal charges.
New greenhouse building: A new office building for greenhouse management, located on the Elvington property, will include a pre-engineered metal building with a walk-in cooler. Construction on the 900-square-foot began Jan. 23 and should be finished by late spring.
