What's going on around CCU's campus?

Sandy Williams, director of Facilities and Maintenance, gives a summer update on campus projects at Coastal Carolina University.

 • Energy Efficiency projects related to Stimulus Funding (lighting, lighting sensor and demand ventilation control upgrades) for the Library, Prince and Wall buildings will be completed by December 2010.

 • Hitting Facility – project should be substantially complete by mid-August.

 • First floor Student Center renovation – project should begin in July or August with completion date to be determined. Game room will be addressed first.

 • Central Energy Plant and Bryan Information Commons (library addition) projects should be bid out in August with construction to begin shortly after.

 • Renovation of the home locker room to an athletic training room should begin in late fall.

 • Academic Classroom/Office Building – An architect has been selected to begin the design phase, with proposed completion by August 2012.

 • Student Recreation/Convocation Center construction began June 3.

 • Science Annex construction to begin this fall.

 • Timber removal is taking place on campus this summer to prepare for upcoming construction projects and a 500-space parking lot behind Kingston Hall.

 • Portables planned for removal from campus during summer 2010 include WBAX 2, 3, 6 and 8 and SCI 3 and 4.

 • Parking lot improvements for Brooks Stadium, Coastal Science Center and the Burroughs & Chapin Marine and Wetlands Center are planned for summer 2010.

 • Extension of University Boulevard across U.S. 501 to be completed during the summer.

 • The Chad Beaty Bell Memorial (bell tower) located near the new Field House should be completed this summer.

 • Dorm improvements include: new flooring in Dogwood and Elm, painting in Palmetto and Oak, ceiling and duct replacement in Palmetto and Oak, heat pump replacement in Maple, shower replacements in Maple, Cypress and the third floor of Waccamaw, new flooring on the third floor of Santee, sidewalk improvements in Woods, addition of two gazebos and construction of a picnic shelter.

 • Commons Dining Hall expansion – Architects are preparing construction documents. Expansion will provide space for an additional food concept, beverage station and increase seating capacity by approximately 175. It will also provide some outdoor dining space. Construction is slated to begin in late 2010 or early 2011,with completion in summer to early fall 2011.

 • Plans are being made to expand the C-Store at University Place to provide hot takeout meals. 

Projects by other entities:

 •  Horry County Higher Education Commission will complete the construction of new intramural fields on East Campus this summer.

 • Horry Georgetown Technical College will complete construction of a roundabout on University Boulevard. Anticipated completion and a ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for Aug. 3

 • The Coastal Educational Foundation is working with the Jackson family on construction of a chapel. Site work is in progress.
