Update on campus construction at CCU

The winter break has been challenging for the facilities and maintenance staff, with all the below-freezing weather that included snow and icy conditions, according to director Rein Mungo. Here’s a short update on ongoing projects:

• Brooks Stadium Phase II – The project features the expansion of Brooks Stadium to include additional seats, restrooms, concessions and suites to the stadium. Mungo said the contractor began on the Phase II demolition on the west side of the stadium, which should be completed in January. Then the areas will be prepped where the pilings are to be installed for the upper deck on the west side.

The university was required to expand the stadium for its move this year to the Football Bowl Subdivision, and seating has increased from 9,214 to approximately 15,500 seats with the first phase. The second phase will include adding a large enclosed luxury suite that can house 300 to 350 people with an accompanying 230 outdoor club seats, plus adding an upper deck to the west side as well as additional features such as new entrances. Total seating could approach 21,000, plus additional standing capacity.

The second phase should be completed by January 2019.

• Freshëns – Freshëns Fresh Food Studio is a healthy “fast casual” concept, which offers prepared-to-order food with fresh ingredients, as well as signature blended smoothies and frozen yogurt. Freshens is moving into the spot where the Subway was located in the CINO Grille. The Freshens staff is completing the final set up, equipment installation and training for the Aramark staff. Freshens is located at 300 colleges and universities.

• Ingle Hall - The existing shingle roof was replaced during the Christmas break.

• Wall Building – The first-floor hallways and foyer were prepped, sanded, primed and painted. The contractor is now working on the faculty suites on each end of the building. After the suites have been painted, the carpet will be replaced to match the rest of the building.

• Kearns Hall – Classroom 201 was painted, new carpet installed, and the table tops replaced.

• Wall Building Fountain – New perimeter seats have been added around to the new fountain in front of the Wall Building, along with enhanced green space at each open area outside of the front entrance parking loop. The brick work for the fountains is now in place, along with the sitting wall areas. Weather permitting, the fountain should be completed by early February.

• Smith Science Building – Substantial completion was on Dec. 14, with punch list items that are currently being taken care of. The building is open and in use.

• Wheelwright Auditorium Restrooms – The restrooms on the first and second floors are being replaced. All of the demolition has occurred, including about 95 percent of the installation of the new sheetrock and wall tile.  This project should be completed in early February, according to Mungo.
