Q&A with Christy Everett Smith

Where are you from? Myrtle Beach, S.C.

What was your major? Master of Business Administration (2008)

Why did you choose Coastal? I received my bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Clemson University in 1995 and had been working in the industry for 10 years when Coastal Carolina University developed an MBA program.  I was a member of the inaugural MBA class in the fall of 2006.  I chose CCU because I was working full time, I am from the area and was excited to attend the local “up and coming” University.

What was your favorite memory of Coastal and why? Getting the opportunity to work with such outstanding professors who are very knowledgeable in their field.  I especially enjoyed working with my mentor, Dr. Ritter, for my thesis research paper.

What was your favorite spot on campus and why? The Wall Building because that is where I spent all my time preparing for, and attending, classes.

Who was/were your favorite professor(s) and why? Dr. Barbara Ritter. She guided me through the research process and supported my journey through the MBA program with great success.

How did Coastal prepare you for your current career? Coastal, specifically the MBA program, gave me the educational background and the practical business management tools I needed, and I have applied these tools to my career in management within the water industry.

What is your current career? Chief Operations Officer with Grand Strand Water & Sewer Authority

Give an example of a fun fact about yourself.  I was awarded the 2018 CCU Outstanding Alumnus of the Year!  I am the proud mother of 15-year-old twins, Lewis and Andrea.

How do you see yourself in 10 years? Continuing my journey as a leader in the area, both professionally and through philanthropic organizations. I plan to also continue to be a mentor to young professionals seeking to become the leaders of tomorrow.
