If you want to meet a student who truly loves Coastal Carolina University, seek out ArRone Washington. A senior political science major, ArRone transferred to CCU because of its size. Bigger than his previous institution yet not too large that he would be “just a number,” Coastal was the perfect fit.

But it just isn’t the size that has appealed to ArRone. He enjoys what he calls the “North meets the South” dynamic. At a University whose student body is split pretty evenly between South Carolina natives and out-of-staters, with many of the latter hailing from the northeastern United States, the campus is filled with people of different upbringings. A Mount Pleasant, S.C., product himself, ArRone has engaged in good-natured discussions with his northern peers about differing cultures.

“When you meet new people you get exposed to new ideas and you can feed off that,” ArRone explains. “It shapes you into a better person.”

ArRone’s hunger for meeting new people led him to a campus job that has allowed him to meet over 1,000 of them during his time at Coastal. Serving as a Teal Trailblazer, ArRone gives campus tours to prospective students and their families. His success in the position can be attributed to his personable nature.

“People can come talk to me and I can go up and talk to them,” ArRone says, describing his approachable and outgoing disposition.

With the goal to find employment within a federal agency, ArRone would especially like to work for the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. Based on his area of study, his involvement in extracurricular activities and his pleasant personality, we think ArRone has a good shot to reach his goal.

As ArRone prepares to graduate, Coastal Carolina is thankful for the #CCUPositiveImpact he has had on so many prospective (who turned into enrolled) students as well as the personal investment he made in our University.

ArRone is a senior.

Q&A with ArRone

How did you hear about Coastal?:  I heard about Coastal through my cousin who currently goes here.

Why did you come to Coastal?:  As a transfer student I wanted a school that was bigger than my previous institution, but not too big that I was seen just as a number. So Coastal became my first choice. The environment is friendly, professors know you by first and last name, and you can meet new and different people every day while walking to class. Not to mention Coastal has become a new family tradition for me because my sister and cousin attend here as well.

Favorite professor: Michael Julius, Ph.D. (aka The Incredible Hulk)

Favorite class: Political Theory

Favorite aspect of Coastal?:  My favorite aspect about Coastal would have to be that we are such a young institution and have already accomplished so much. When I think about where this school could be in the next decade I know that the teal wave will cover all of South Carolina and maybe even the entire East Coast!

Favorite aspect of living in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area?: My favorite aspect of living in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area would have to be the fact that you have a vacation destination in your back yard with a lot of attractions and places to have a good time. While at the same time the small quaint town of Conway gives you that right at home feeling!

Clubs/Intramurals/other extracurricular activities involved in?: I am involved in the South Carolina Student Legislature, Phi Alpha Delta, Dalton and Linda Floyd Mentoring Program, and a Teal Trailblazer.

Do you work anywhere currently (either on or off campus)?:  Yes I do. I am a Teal Trailblazer which is a tour guide for the school. I love my job and have met with over 1,000 potential students.

Plans after graduation?: After graduation I am really hoping to get a job at a federal agency in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area. Hopefully they will pay for grad school. I pray it all works out!

What are your hobbies?: My hobbies include listening to music, helping others, a little singing, and always wearing a smile

Do you have any hidden talents?: I can bake really good chocolate chip cookies!

Bonus Info: Overall I am a happy-go-lucky person. I may look shy and reserved, but as that famous saying goes don’t judge a book by its cover.
