For Avery Shorts, “it was love at first sight.” When he visited campus for the first time, he knew Coastal Carolina University was for him. He became a Chanticleer and now halfway through his freshman year, he is already making a name for himself.

From Cheraw, S.C., Avery chose CCU so he could enroll in the Spadoni College of Education and achieve his goal of becoming a teacher. The middle level education major is off to a good start and has not lost an ounce of energy for leading a classroom in the future.

“I am so passionate about education and I want to show children possibilities they may not see on a day-to-day basis,” Avery says.

But before he leads middle school students, he is going to lead new college students. Avery was selected as a 2019 orientation leader and will have a big influence on the CCU Class of 2023. Orientation leader positions are coveted and competition is strong, but Avery, who describes himself as ambitious, was not going to be denied.

“Everything I do for a reason and I won’t stop until I do it,” Avery declares.

Not a bad attitude to have, right? We look forward to watching Avery thrive over the next few years.
