When you see Christina Nance on the volleyball court, you might feel intimidated (especially if you are on the other team). Standing 6 feet 3 inches tall with a self-proclaimed “mean” face, Christina is a commanding presence on the hardwood. However, once she takes off her uniform and leaves the gym, this Chanticleer volleyball student-athlete assumes her natural persona. She describes herself in one word: goofy.
“I’m always smiling, laughing, giggling, dancing…or doing something weird,” Christina says with a laugh. “I’m just a goofball.”
A goofball who happens to be extremely intelligent.
In addition to the pressures of playing Division I volleyball for a successful program with lofty goals, Christina is double majoring in computer science and information technology. She chose this rigorous academic direction because she understands that technology is always changing, yet always vulnerable. Society needs smart individuals who can keep pace with the dynamic tech world and Christina fits the bill. She wants to enter the cyber forensics industry and work for the FBI in its Cyber Crime Division.
There is much more to Christina than volleyball and academics. She has built a vibrant social life on campus, thanks to her involvement with SGA and her knack for connecting with others.
“I have grown as an individual through playing volleyball, but also by being active on campus and meeting different kinds of people,” Christina explains. “All those interactions have shaped me into being a better communicator and person in general.”
Christina has so much going for her right now. Just a sophomore, we are excited to watch her continue to pursue her academic, athletic and leadership ambitions. The sky is the limit for #14.
Q&A with Christina
How did you hear about Coastal?: Simone Asque, a former Coastal Carolina University assistant volleyball coach, talked to me about the University during my recruitment process.
Why did you come to Coastal?: I came to Coastal because the campus was so nice in addition to the great weather. I was attracted to the atmosphere as soon as I stepped on campus. I also came to Coastal for the opportunity to learn both, the technical and security, sides of computer science. Plus the opportunity to play volleyball at a high level was all I needed to come study at this amazing institution.
Favorite professor: Douglas Weathers (MATH*174 Discrete Math Teacher)
Favorite class: CSCI*211 Computer Infrastructure
Favorite aspect of Coastal?: Oh, that’s a tough one. There are so many. I would have to say all the friends I have made here. There’s literally never a dull moment. Every person I have encountered has impacted me in one way or the other and for that I am just blessed to have the opportunity to be in this position. Since I couldn’t pick just one, I would also say the HTC Center because that’s the home for the volleyball team. We have had some great moments on that court.
Favorite aspect of living in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area?: Warm weather since I am from up north but also the family-oriented culture. I have felt this friendly environment not just at Coastal but off campus as well.
Clubs/Intramurals/other extracurricular activities involved in?: Student Government Association (SGA) Senator, Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) President, CCU volleyball team, Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Plans after graduation?: Cyber Forensics Analyst for the FBI in their Cyber Crime Division.
What are your hobbies?: Sleeping, meeting new people, watching movies, hanging out with family and friends, dancing, listening to music, and telling corny jokes.
Do you have any hidden talents?: I can tell some pretty bad jokes.
Bonus Info: Coastal has impacted my life so much in a short period of time. It has challenged me to be a better teammate, women, friend, classmate and so much more. I never thought Coastal would have affected me as much as it has in these past two years. To say I am excited for the next three years would be an understatement. #ChantsUp
