Courtney Sabo wanted a change. Not that she didn’t like living in Fairfax County, Va., but she knew a change of scenery could broaden her horizons. She researched education departments at numerous universities and when the Spadoni College of Education graded out as her favorite, she made the decision to attend Coastal Carolina. Her choice opened her eyes.

“Coastal has allowed me to meet new people from all around the country since it is such a diverse school,” Courtney reflects when explaining how CCU has impacted her for the better.

Engaging with a student body made up of individuals from a variety of backgrounds is not the only CCU strong point for Courtney. The education program turned out to be as stellar as what she was led to believe during her college research. Her time in the Spadoni College of Education has only reinforced her reasoning for becoming a teacher.

“I want to teach because I love seeing the faces of children when they learn something new,” Courtney explains. “They think it’s the most amazing thing that day until they learn something else new.”

True to her teacher personality, Courtney is cognizant that elementary students aren’t the only ones who can benefit from either learning or trying something new. She has some helpful advice for freshman students who started their first semester at Coastal earlier this month.

“Open up your mind. Try new things. Your freshman year is a time to have fun but also to try hard in school.”

Recently married and with a desire to teach in Horry County Schools, Courtney will most likely stay in the area upon graduation. She will make a terrific permanent addition to our community. We wish Courtney the best.

Courtney was married in Cape Cod this past September.
Courtney is from Fairfax County, Va.
