I found out about CCU my junior year of high school when it came time to start looking for colleges. My mom told me about the school as she has always talked about how great the state of South Carolina is. I really didn’t understand what she meant until I came to visit the school and it all made sense. I fell in love almost immediately when I stepped onto this beautiful campus for the first time. The sense of community that I felt here was something I was looking for in my college search. I will never forget the sense of wonder that rushed through me when my campus tour group went through Swain Hall and I thought to myself, “This is it. This is what I have been looking for!” I felt at home at Coastal and knew I wanted to see what else the world had to offer other than New Jersey which was all I knew until I graduated high school.

I would describe my four years at CCU as nothing short of life changing. It was here that I got my first real taste of independence. Since I chose to come to CCU, I have grown into a very responsible and driven individual as I have established my adulthood here in the Grand Strand area. The amazing biology program at Coastal Carolina has advanced my desire to help others and deepened my passion for science in general. In addition to this, I have crossed paths with so many new people that I would have never met if I had stayed closer to New Jersey including members of the Chanticleer Regiment, the amazing people of A Moment of Magic, local bands such as EMPTY, and fellow members of the scientific community. There are so many others who have helped enhance my love for this area and University while shaping who I am today.

Meet Dean

Favorite professor: I have to say a few because it would be so hard to narrow this down to just one professor. I would say Paul Richardson, Ph.D., Daniel Williams, Ph.D., Bryan Wakefield, Ph.D.,  and Fang Ju Lin, Ph.D. These four professors have provided me with so much knowledge and tools to use in my academic career from lab techniques to how to write better papers to being a better scientist.

Favorite class: Microbiology with Megan Cevasco, Ph.D.

Campus Involvement (organizations, activities, etc.): A Moment of Magic, C.L.I.M.B. (Collaborative Learning Initiative for Molecular Biology), TriBeta, Chanticleer Regiment (freshman year).

Favorite trait of #CCU: I really love the sense of community that Coastal Carolina University has to offer. Coming from a small town in New Jersey that had a lot of school pride (GO BLUE STREAKS), Teal Nation really resonated with me as I saw a lot of what I enjoyed about my hometown in CCU. The campus is also gorgeous, and I still find myself standing and admiring it all the time.

Favorite Netflix series: Mindhunter

Item you would bring to a deserted island: Guitar, despite being a science major, I still have a love for music and performing as well. (Backup dream jobs would be either rockstar or SNL cast member)

Dream job: Pathologist. I would like to start out as a pathology lab technician and get experience in the field. After that, I might want to go back to school and earn a graduate degree in microbiology to further myself in the field and possibly move into leading my own research.

Motivating factor in life: My biggest goals in life are to help others and try to make them happy. I feel like there is so much suffering and bad stuff in this world. I take it is as my personal duty to try and help those I encounter see the brighter side of life and fight past the bad things. With pathology, I will have the ability to help give people answers that could assist them in getting the treatment they need and improve their wellbeing.

Favorite quote: “I see now that the circumstances of one's birth are irrelevant. It is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are.”-Mewtwo
