Devon's Video

Devon Brownlee says that his senior year at Coastal has so far been a “life changing experience.” Need an example?

On Oct. 22, Devon stood on the Brooks Stadium turf in front of a crowd of 9,217. Seconds earlier he had just walked across the field as his name was announced as part of the prestigious Homecoming Court. To earn a spot in such exclusive company is an incredible achievement, but Devon had his sights set on the highest honor. Before the public address announcer named the 2016 Homecoming King there was a noticeable pause. Finally, the announcement came…

Devon Brownlee.

With his crowning, the applause, the photos with President and Mrs. David A. DeCenzo and the whirlwind of happy emotions he felt, it was undoubtedly an amazing moment that has helped shape this “life changing” senior year experience for Devon.

But of course there is more to Devon than just his 2016 Homecoming King title. This history student from Columbia has devoted his entire four years to serving the University and others. He boasts a laundry list of organizations he has worked on and speaks of Coastal Carolina only in glowing terms. It doesn’t matter if it is a community member, a fellow student, or an elementary student he is mentoring, Devon will always put others before himself.

Coastal Carolina University congratulates Devon Brownlee on his achievement and is proud that he is representing the Coastal community as Homecoming King.

Q&A with Devon

How did you hear about Coastal?: I heard about Coastal Carolina during my junior year of high school. This is when my best friend (Major Kennedy) and I decided to apply for the school together praying we would be admitted at the same time. Senior year is when we both heard back from the University about our acceptance.

Why did you come to Coastal?: I came to Coastal Carolina University of course for my education. It is a great location with plenty of activities to be involved in.

Favorite professor: Dr. Savage Davis

Favorite class: History 396

Favorite aspect of Coastal?: My favorite aspect of Coastal would be the great opportunities the University places in front of you. Our school has a large amount of student organizations and work study openings, ways for students to constantly stay engaged on and off campus.

Favorite aspect of living in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area?: My favorite aspect of living at the beach would be how close we are to the water. I love going down to the beach during the summer time and at night to walk the strip. Being on the beach really clears your mind and gives you the chance to get away from your everyday schedule to do some reflecting.

Clubs/Intramurals/other extracurricular activities involved in?:

3 on 3 intramural basketball since my freshman year

Co-Ed basketball tournament freshman year

Member of AAIM (African American Initiatives for Men)

Member of NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People)

Served as a SNAP mentor (Students Navigating and Assisting Peers)

Served as a member of CALL Me MISTER (Educational Teaching Program based on African American Servant Leaders)

Served in the Dalton and Linda Floyd Family Mentor-Mentoring Program (South Conway Elementary)

President/Historian of my fraternity for two years

Desk assistant in Fraternity and Sorority (Student Life)

Do you work anywhere currently (either on or off campus)?: I am currently employed at H&M retail and fashion store. I also work at GH Bass & Co. located in the Tanger Outlets.

Plans after graduation?:  My plans after graduation are to continue my studies here at Coastal Carolina University through our Instructional Technology graduate program. This program lasts 12 months so it will be a great chance to build my credentials as I will be preparing after that to obtain my Ph.D. in history.

What are your hobbies?: My hobbies include working with computers, reading, playing video games, eating, hanging with family and traveling.

Do you have any hidden talents?: One of my hidden talents would be that I can skateboard.

Bonus Info: Wrapping up my first semester of my senior year at Coastal has been a life changing experience. As I get ready to prepare for the spring and graduation I continue to stay level-headed and locked in on my academics as I know they can take me far in life. I truly appreciate the opportunity to be featured for #CCUfamily as this will be something I never forget.
