Erica Armellino took the advice of a trusted friend and gave Coastal Carolina University a hard look during her college search. It just so happened that CCU stood out from the other schools on her list. In fact, it stood out just enough that she made the big move from Long Island, N.Y., to Conway to become a Chanticleer.

An education major, Erica wants to become an elementary teacher. Specifically, she wants to help young students with learning disabilities, a cause important to Erica because she battled learning disabilities during her own elementary years.

“I want to help students have that light bulb go off the moment they understand what they are learning,” Erica explains.

An outgoing individual, Erica has discovered camaraderie here at Coastal. She became involved with the Student Chanticleer Athletic Foundation (SCAF) where she has met fellow students like herself who are passionate about supporting CCU’s athletic programs and student-athletes. You can find Erica and her friends at various athletic contests cheering on the Chants and helping produce a great game day atmosphere.

Erica has a lot of time left at Coastal. Just a freshman, she has many more classes to take and many more games to attend. But with the short time she has spent in the area, she already knows that she wants to begin her teaching career right here in South Carolina. We thank Erica for coming to Coastal and hope she continues to have a great experience.

Erica enjoys surfing.

Q&A with Erica

How did you hear about Coastal?: My friend, Kristina, is a senior here at Coastal and she told me how wonderful the school is and how the education program is amazing. She was right! This campus is beautiful and I learn something new every day.

Why did you come to Coastal?: As I visited other schools, I knew I wanted to attend a college with that “home” type feel. Unfortunately, I didn’t get that feeling on my various visits to other institutions. However, when I visited Coastal I instantly felt at home. I told my parents that no matter what, I was going here.

Favorite professor: My favorite professor has to be Lisa Graves. She is my English teacher. She is really outgoing and always gets us involved in the class. She has a lot of energy which I appreciate in a teacher because it keeps the class fun and helps us to stay focused on the topic.

Favorite class: My favorite class is University 110 which is taught by Professor Marks. Its my favorite because starting Tuesday I will be going to an elementary school to be a student teach and see what teaching is all about.

Favorite aspect of coastal?: I have many favorite aspects. I enjoy the teal field, the HTC Center and the Edwards Building. The teal field is so pretty and I love how it is so bright where you can see it from an airplane. The HTC Center is great with the indoor track and all the high quality equipment. With the Edwards Building, I love relaxing in the courtyard. I close my eyes, listen to the fountain and reflect on how peaceful the atmosphere is.

Favorite aspect of living in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area?: My favorite aspect of living in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area is probably how close we are to the beach. When I am having a bad day or a bad week I like to go to the beach on Sunday afternoon with my friends to just relax and recharge.

Clubs/Intramurals/other extracurricular activities involved in?: I am currently part of the Student Chanticleer Athletic Foundation (SCAF), an organization that strives to create an energetic and powerful game day atmosphere at the athletic contest. I also recently joined the Rotaract Club which is focused on community service, networking and socials.

Plans after graduation?: After graduation, my goal is become an elementary teacher and have an impact on the lives of students.

What are your hobbies?: My favorite hobby is surfing. I have surfed since I was 5 years old and I started competitive surfing at the age of 11. I also exercise in the HTC Center once a day.
