When Francesca Caravella started her college search, she looked for an institution that would offer her opportunities. After a friend made her aware of Coastal Carolina University, she did her research. Wanting to attend a university far from home in a beautiful location, CCU seemed almost too good to be true. However, even if CCU was on the other side of the world in a literal paradise it would not have convinced Francesca to attend if it lacked the component that her search centered on. Luckily for both Francesca and CCU, that driving factor was not lacking.
“CCU has had a positive impact on me because there are so many opportunities to get involved and be a leader,” Francesca explains, emphasizing the main reason she became a Chanticleer.
Hailing from Scituate, Mass., Francesca came to Coastal and immediately became involved, joining the CCU chapter of Alpha Delta Pi. Her involvement in the sorority sparked an overall passion for Greek Life. Not only did she land a position in the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life but she was named Greek Woman of the Year during the 2016-17 academic year.
While Francesca points out that Greek Life has given her the opportunity to “grow as a person through leadership positions,” she does not overlook the other ways Coastal has helped her grow. A part of the Dalton and Linda Floyd Mentoring Program as well as a member of various honor societies, Francesca has benefited by becoming involved in organizations that stretch beyond her sorority.
Francesca’s career dream is to become an event planner in the Boston area. We have confidence that a smart employer will give her an opportunity to prove herself just like she has done at CCU.
Q&A with Francesca
How did you hear about Coastal?: I heard about Coastal because my best friend applied and told me I would love it and it turns out I did! She didn’t end up coming to Coastal but that didn’t change my decision because I loved it so much.
Why did you come to Coastal?: I came to Coastal because I knew I wanted to be far from home for the true college experience and I loved the school spirit here. I was also drawn to how close it is to the beach and I loved the beauty of campus. Finally, I saw the opportunities available in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area for me as a hospitality major.
Favorite professor: Professor David Doerring
Favorite class: PHIL 318 Business Ethics
Favorite aspect of Coastal?: My favorite aspect of Coastal is all the different ways you can get involved and all the opportunities it offers.
Favorite aspect of living in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area?: My favorite aspect of living in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area is being close to the beach and having so much to do on my down time.
Clubs/Intramurals/other extracurricular activities involved in?: I am involved in Alpha Delta Pi sorority, Order of Omega Honors Fraternity, Eta Sigma Delta Honors Society, and the Peer Mentoring Program.
Do you work anywhere currently (either on or off campus)?: I work in the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
Plans after graduation?: I plan to go back home and become an event planner in the Boston area.
What are your hobbies?: My hobbies include going to the beach, cooking and hanging out with friends.
Do you have any hidden talents?: I don’t have many hidden talents but I like to consider myself a good cook, it is the Italian blood in me!
Bonus Info: I am very passionate about Coastal and Greek Life and how they have both given me so many opportunities to get involved and become a leader. I was awarded Greek Women of the Year during the 2016-17 SILA Awards which really was an amazing experience. I love being a leader and can’t thank Coastal enough!
