Jerrod Robinson has a career vision mapped out. The senior history major from Greer, S.C., wants to enter student affairs in higher education so he can help “develop leaders of society.”  Luckily, his mother enthusiastically encouraged him to apply at CCU. You see, if she didn’t, there is a good chance the other colleges on his list would not have offered half the relevant experience Jerrod has gained as a Chanticleer.

Where to start with Jerrod’s impressive resume of leading students? Perhaps we should start with his student assistant position within the Office of Campus Life and Student Engagement.  Jerrod works under the vice president of the department, Debbie Conner, Ph.D., an individual who has 25 years of experience in student affairs. From what we have gathered, he has soaked up every minute he has spent under her tutelage.

Jerrod has earned a couple of major and coveted roles working with new students. This past summer, he was an orientation leader. Making sure new Chants felt valued and welcomed at their new home, he did all he could to preview the opportunities available to them.

“Introducing students to Coastal was one of the highlights of my entire college career,” Jerrod reflects.

Complimenting his orientation leader gig is his position as a resident adviser. Serving in CINO Hall, Jerrod has relished the opportunity to learn from all the groups he works with on a daily basis, knowing each one is a crucial component of student affairs.

“There are no many great people, not just the residents and your fellow RAs, but the professional staff working behind the scenes as well,” Jerrod explains. “I have been introduced to a lot of great leaders and mentors and people who will help me further myself not only as a person but in my career as well.”

Jerrod will take his personal experiences and lessons from others to graduate school. Although he doesn’t have a specific institution picked out just yet, he wants to earn his master’s degree in student affairs. Remarking that CCU made him much more confident in his abilities as a leader, chances are good that Jerrod will always fondly remember his undergraduate alma mater. Of course, we will always fondly remember Jerrod.

Why did you come to Coastal?: After I took a tour of campus, I instantly fell in love. The campus was beautiful and my tour guide was very informed on everything here. It felt like home. Plus, the distance from back home, far away enough to where I can be free but close enough to where if anything were to happen, then I'd be alright.

Favorite professor: Veronica Gerald, Ph.D.

Favorite aspect of Coastal?: The 24-hour library.

Favorite aspect of living in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area?:  The local restaurants.

Clubs/Intramurals/other extracurricular activities involved in?:

Do you work anywhere currently (either on or off campus)?: I am a resident adviser in CINO Hall and a student assistant for Debbie Conner, Ph.D., in the Office of Campus Life and Student Engagement

Plans after graduation?: I want to attend grad school. Not sure where, but It will be somewhere earning my graduate degree in higher education student affairs.

What are your hobbies?: Sleeping, watching Netflix, playing video games, reading.

Do you have any hidden talents?: I sing very well in the shower. I also dabble in poetry but I am no Langston Hughes – but I am decent.

Bonus Info: I believe that every person has a calling in life, and I personally believe that my calling is to help other people find the best in themselves and to help bring the best out of them.
