When the time came for Mike Cahill to make his college choice, he didn’t want to land in an area without beach access. From East Hampton, N.Y., he grew up by the beach and wasn’t ready to give it up. Luckily he learned about Coastal Carolina University at a high school college fair and put it on his short list. Funny enough, when he visited campus for the first time he didn’t even need to see the beach to make his decision. The second he turned onto University Boulevard he knew CCU was for him.

An exercise and sport science junior, Mike has a career goal of becoming a pediatric physician assistant. If you know Mike, his career choice makes sense. He describes himself as compassionate and when it comes to children and healthcare, perhaps something they need even more than a treatment plan is genuine compassion.

When you have your future planned out, it makes your college experience less stressful. You can enjoy each day while at the same time working toward your goal. This is the spot Mike is in. He is taking advantage of what Coastal has to offer while thriving in his studies. The honors student is working hard to continue his academic success so he can earn acceptance into his choice of graduate school.

“CCU definitely made me come out of my shell and it opened doors up to many new opportunities,” Mike explains, adding, “It has just been a great experience overall.”

Complimenting Coastal for offering an environment where “there is never a dull moment and you will never be bored,” we hope the excitement for Mike lasts through May of 2019 when he graduates. We are happy to have him part of #TEALnation.

Mike has a dog named Brody.

Q&A with Mike

How did you hear about Coastal?: I heard about Coastal through a college fair at my high school. I also had a few friends and cousins that went to CCU.

Why did you come to Coastal?: I came to Coastal because it was the only school out of all the ones I toured I felt was the right fit for me. As soon as I drove onto University Boulevard and stepped on the campus I knew it was the one for me.

Favorite professor: I’d have to say my favorite professor is Hugh Lamont, Ph.D. I took his exercise physiology course and I am currently taking his Exercise 399 course. I will also be taking another class for him in the fall of 2018. He is an intelligent individual that wants his students to learn the information and succeed.

Favorite class: My favorite class is Exercise Testing and Prescription. It involves computing individual maximal amounts of oxygen consumption and prescribing an exercise regimen for them.

Favorite aspect of Coastal?: My favorite aspect about Coastal is all the events and activities that go on. There is never a dull moment and you will never be bored.

Favorite aspect of living in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area?: I grew up near the beach in New York so having the beach close by is a real plus. I also really enjoy having the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge right around the corner from Coastal. It is a great place to relax and take in all the wildlife South Carolina has to offer.

Plans after graduation?: After I graduate, I plan on enrolling in a graduate program and become a pediatric physician assistant

What are your hobbies?: My hobbies include going to the gym, taking care of my dog Brody and photography.

Bonus Info: As an honor student in the honors program, I am passionate about my studies and my future ambitions.
