CCU adapts cult favorite 'The Rocky Horror Show'

October 5, 2012

The Department of Theatre at Coastal Carolina University will present a daring new multimedia adaptation of the cult favorite "The Rocky Horror Show" beginning Thursday, Oct. 11, at the 79th Avenue Theatre in CCU's Myrtle Beach Education Center. The show is intended for mature audiences.

Written by Richard O'Brien in the early 1970s, "The Rocky Horror Show" was a legendary stage and movie musical, becoming one of the biggest cult phenomenons in entertainment history. A campy musical spoof of old horror and sci-fi movies, it's all about what happens when innocent Brad and his fiancé Janet get a flat tire and seek shelter at the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a "sweet transvestite from Transsexual Transylvania."

CCU's adaptation of the show, directed by Robin Edwards-Russell, associate professor of theatre, takes advantage of the intimate space of the 79th Avenue Theatre to promote audience participation, one of the signature traditions of the "Rocky Horror" experience. (Kits with all the appropriate props will be available for purchase.)

"This 'Rocky Horror' is raw and in your face," said Edwards-Russell. "It will indeed make you blush, but that's part of the fun."

The cast members include CCU students: Alexa Doggett, Michael Lawrence, Hannah Zilber, Charlie Tingen, Lexie Wohlfort, Taylor Wright, Aaron Burr, Elliott Scott Smith, Laura Pierpont, Anna Sheridan, Gabrielle Harker, Jennifer Pagano, Drew Taylor, Connor DeVoe and Tyler Keller. David Bankston, associate professor of music, will narrate. Barbara Hartwig, lecturer and artist-in-residence, will choreograph the show. Michael Gribbin, a visiting associate professor of theatre, is the music director.

Showtimes are: Oct. 11 to 14, and 17 to 20 at 7:30 p.m. There will be 11 p.m. performances on Oct. 13 and 19.

Ticket prices are: general admission, $15; CCU and Horry Georgetown Technical College students, $5 (one ticket per valid ID); CCU and HGTC faculty/staff, $10 (two per valid ID); alumni and senior citizens (ages 65 and older), $10.

The Myrtle Beach Education Center is located at 79th Avenue North and U.S. 17 Bypass in Myrtle Beach. To purchase tickets, visit www.coastal.edu/theatre/ or call the Wheelwright Auditorium Box office at 843-349-2502.
