The Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery at Coastal Carolina University will present the work of Tennessee contemporary painter and mixed media artist, Herb Rieth, from Monday, July 7, through Thursday, Aug. 7. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Rieth creates mixed media work in fabric, paint and collage by making and mending, which stem from the traditions of his family. He works with materials such as safety pins, spikes, embroidery floss, paint and more. He is motivated by personal and political stories and uses sewing, repair and embellishment to achieve juxtaposing patterns.

"Though firmly grounded in the painting tradition, my work also explores notions of repair, material significance and disjuncture," he says. "My methodology involves painting a base out of scraps of collected fabric. Typically, the fabric has had a past life and often holds a strong personal connection."

Rieth's work has been shown at Cincinnati's UnMuseum at The Contemporary Arts Center, the Mississippi Museum of Art, and various solo and group shows in 23 states. He resides in Knoxville, Tenn., and teaches at Pellissippi State Community College.

The Bryan Gallery is located in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at 133 Chanticleer Drive E. on CCU's campus.
