HCHEC awards record number of application-based scholarships to new and continuing local students at CCU

The Horry County Higher Education Commission (HCHEC) recently awarded its annual application-based scholarships to 31 Horry County high school seniors and graduates who have either been accepted to or are continuing their education at Coastal Carolina University for the 2021-2022 academic year. This marks the largest group of scholarships awarded by the commission, which also established new scholarships for transfer students, continuing students, and graduate students. These recipients join a growing body of local students who receive scholarship funding from the HCHEC.

Each scholarship provides $2,500 per academic year to qualified Horry County students who show exemplary academic work, leadership, or perseverance through hardship and/or adversity.

HCHEC Undergraduate Scholarships were awarded to the following new students:

• Katelyn Baker – an intended history major from Myrtle Beach; Carolina Forest High School.

• Derek Bender – an intended interdisciplinary studies major from Murrells Inlet; St. James High School.

• Sydney Byers – an intended early childhood education major from Myrtle Beach; Carolina Forest High School.

• Timothy Carroll – an intended business major from Conway; Carolina Forest High School.

• Emerson Cicala – an undeclared major from Myrtle Beach; HCS Early College High School.

• Anthony Fattizzi – an intended chemistry major from Myrtle Beach; Socastee High School.

• Adrian Green – an intended engineering science major from Myrtle Beach; Socastee High School.

• Kylie Kocot – an intended undeclared major from Myrtle Beach; Socastee High School.

• Brendan Marlowe – an intended finance major from Conway; Carolina Forest High School.

• Jacob Morgan – an intended marine science major from Murrells Inlet; St. James High School.

• Ana Pettijohn – an intended biology major from Myrtle Beach; Carolina Forest High School.

• Joseph Powalie – an intended finance major from Myrtle Beach; Carolina Forest High School.

• Adrian Reyes – an intended computer science major from Myrtle Beach; St. James High School.

• Maxwell Santa – an intended communications major from Conway; Aynor High School.

• Eunice Sudjana – an intended accounting major from Myrtle Beach; Carolina Forest High School.

HCHEC Undergraduate Scholarship was awarded to the following new transfer student:

• Athena Isernia – an intended public health major from Myrtle Beach; Carolina Forest High School/Horry-Georgetown Technical College.

HCHEC Hardship and Adversity Scholarships were awarded to the following new students:

• Jacob Bartlett – an intended history major from Myrtle Beach; St. James High School.

• Hadley Ellis – an intended biochemistry major from Loris; Loris High School.

• Caleb Godfree – an intended business major from Myrtle Beach; Carolina Forest High School.

• Samantha Holman – an intended music major from Myrtle Beach; Carolina Forest High School.

• Elijah Miller – an intended music major from Myrtle Beach; Socastee High School.

• Stephanie Panos – an intended exercise sports science major from Myrtle Beach; St. James High School.

HCHEC Emerging Scholars Awards were awarded to the following continuing students:

• Francis Aiello – a business major from Conway; Carolina Forest High School graduate.

• Riley Beam – a mathematics major from Myrtle Beach; Carolina Forest High School graduate.

• Morgan Britt-Tripp – an interdisciplinary studies major from Little River; North Myrtle Beach High School graduate.

• David Custer – a statistics major from Little River; North Myrtle Beach High School graduate.

• Emily Edge – a psychology major from Myrtle Beach; Carolina Forest High School graduate.

• Chloe Hanes – a music major from Little River; North Myrtle Beach High School graduate.

• Meghan Thomas – an exercise sports science major from Myrtle Beach; Socastee High School graduate.

HCHEC Graduate Scholarships were awarded to the following graduate students:

• Krystle Ballatore – a student in the Ph.D. in education program from Myrtle Beach; St. James High School graduate.

• Rebekah Krivanek – a student in the Master of Education in instructional technology program from Murrells Inlet; St. James High School graduate.

The HCHEC Undergraduate Scholarships are designed to recognize students for their academic excellence. To qualify, applicants must have earned a minimum 3.0 high school grade point average (GPA) through their junior year and have an established record of exemplary academic performance.

The HCHEC Hardship and Adversity Scholarships are designed to assist Horry County seniors who plan to attend CCU and have persevered through hardship and/or adversity. This scholarship also requires a minimum 3.0 high school GPA and demonstration of having endured a hardship and/or adversity.

The HCHEC Emerging Scholar Awards are designed to assist Horry County students studying at CCU who have completed at least 30 collegiate credits and have earned a 3.0 collegiate GPA. The HCHEC Graduate Scholarships are designed to assist Horry County students wishing to pursue a graduate degree at CCU. To qualify, students must submit an application describing their commitment to their field of study and to CCU and the community.
