CCU earns national recognition for financial reporting

November 23, 2021

Coastal Carolina University has been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting, a national award given by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA), for its 2020 annual comprehensive financial report (ACFR).

According to GFOA, the Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management. As the individual primarily responsible for preparing the award-winning ACFR, Greg Thompson, CCU’s associate vice president of finance and controller, received an Award of Financial Reporting Achievement.

“Coastal’s excellence in financial management, as recognized through this national award, confirms our commitment to sound fiscal responsibility,” said CCU President Michael T. Benson. “I am thankful for the leadership and due diligence exhibited by all members of our financial team.”

This national recognition reflects the careful attention to accuracy and transparency that CCU strives for in all its financial operations. The award letter states that Coastal’s ACFR has been judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program, which includes demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the ACFR.

The GFOA is a nonprofit association that provides best practices, professional development, resources, and practical research for more than 21,000 members and the communities they serve.
