Accounting scholarship established

Whitney Hucks ’12, ’13 with her brother, Matthew ’16

Timothy and Sylvia Hucks of Myrtle Beach, along with their son, Matthew, and family and friends, have made a financial commitment to support students majoring in accounting at Coastal Carolina University. The Hucks family established the Whitney E. Hucks CPA Annual and Endowed Scholarship in memory of their daughter, who passed away on Aug. 30, 2021. She earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a Master of Accountancy degree from CCU in 2012 and 2013, respectively.

In remembering their daughter, the Hucks family said, “Whitney had an infectious smile and never met a stranger. She loved everything about Coastal. She loved her professors and attending sporting events. She taught her brother [Matthew earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing in 2016] all the ins and outs of Coastal. This is the place she loved, and we want to leave a legacy in her name because Coastal was such a part of her life. We want to give back to the University and help other students in the community.”

The scholarship will support students majoring in accounting in the D. Wyatt Henderson Department of Accounting. Preference will be given to students who graduated high school within Horry County Schools.

“We are very humbled that the Hucks family is remembering their daughter, Whitney, in such a meaningful way,” said Eric Rivenbark, CCU’s senior director of major gifts and planned giving. “She was absolutely loved by everyone in the accounting department while she served as a graduate assistant. This scholarship will allow her legacy to impact many future accounting students at CCU.”

As a CCU student, Hucks was a recipient of the University’s President’s Scholar Award and the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship Award. In recognition of her academic success, she earned President’s List honors for four semesters and Dean’s List honors for four semesters. After graduation, she became a Certified Public Accountant and worked with her father at his firm, M. Timothy Hucks PA, CPA, until her untimely death.
