Like many of our students at Coastal, Alexis DiMarzo is involved in organizations and other extracurricular activities. However, the list of initiatives that line the resume of this political science junior from Kent Island, Md., will make any employer immediately take notice.

Take for example her internship with the UN Youth Corps. Alexis works with the Waccamaw Council of Governments performing census data analysis to implement the 17 sustainable goals of the United Nations.  Or, consider her involvement with the South Carolina Student Legislature. Not only is she an active member but she serves as the secretary of state.  Then of course you must mention her status as an Edwards College Research Fellow, a role that allows her to develop and improve her research methods. Don’t forget to mention that she also participates in mock trial!

Despite the serious involvement listed above, Alexis has a different commitment that she is especially fond of. A proud sister of Tri Sigma, she is passionate about the philanthropic work her sorority performs. Tri Sigma partners with March of Dimes, a nonprofit organization that focuses on improving the health of mothers and babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Alexis and her sisters aggressively fundraise for the organization, a cause she finds completely worthwhile.

Alexis has big future plans. After attending law school in Washington D.C., she wants to work for an international firm devoted towards women’s empowerment. Why? Describing herself as empowered, she wants to pass this liberating state of mind on to others.

“I believe that it’s not only important to be confident in myself but to ensure confidence in others,” Alexis says.

We recognize the impact Alexis has made at Coastal and we commend her future plans. Students like her make #TEALnation such a special place.

Q&A with Alexis

How did you hear about Coastal?: Others in my high school had attended and loved it.

Why did you come to Coastal?: I had always dreamed of going to a school in the South. Additionally, CCU provided access to the Intelligence and National Security Program (if I ever decided to pursue a career in that field) and my best friend was going here.

Favorite professors: Richard Aidoo, Ph.D., Pamela Martin, Ph.D.,  Kaitlin Sidorsky, Ph.D.

Favorite class: Currently it is Poli 491: Sustainable Development in Georgetown. However, my overall favorite course at Coastal has been Comparative Security Issues.

Favorite aspect of Coastal?: Even with a medium sized campus, everyone somehow knows someone. Most students are easygoing and easy to get along with. Coastal offers so many opportunities for their students to travel on behalf of their major such as the UN Youth Corps, Mock Trial, and the South Carolina Student Legislature.

Favorite aspect of living in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area?:  The community is very welcoming and will go out of the way to help students. Our school is everyone else’s vacation.

Clubs/Intramurals/other extracurricular activities involved in?: Tri Sigma sister (Honor Council Member), Phi Alpha Delta Pre- Law Fraternity (President), South Carolina Student Legislature (Secretary of State), and Mock Trial.

Do you work anywhere currently (either on or off campus)?: I am a Research Fellow for the Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts under Kaitlin Sidorsky, Ph.D., and I am an UN Youth Corps intern in Georgetown, SC.

Plans after graduation?: Attend law school in the DC area and pursue a dual degree with a juris doctorate in corporate law and a master’s degree in international relations. I would love to work for an international firm devoted towards women empowerment.

What are your hobbies?: Traveling, debating, photography, and playing with my dog Ellie.

Bonus Info: I could not have picked a better school to earn my degree. I have truly been able to create lifelong friendships and networking opportunities.
