Most established photographers wait a career for the opportunity to work an event such as the College World Series. Even those who are lucky enough to cover it seldom get the opportunity to capture it from the perspective of an underdog team that manages to take home the national title in dramatic fashion. Thus, you might find some veteran photographers around the country who are a bit envious that the job of chronicling the storybook College World Series ride of the Coastal Carolina baseball team fell on the shoulders of Alex Symcak.
A senior from Arlington, Va., Alex was in the right place at the right time when the Chanticleers invaded Omaha and left with the most important trophy in college baseball. With the team every step of the way, she took the photos that will be etched within the fabric of Coastal Carolina history for a very long time. Not letting the gigantic stage intimidate her, she stood toe-to-toe with the best in the sports photography industry and produced outstanding work.
Although she is now removed from the confines of TD Ameritrade Park, she is still working her photography magic over 1,300 miles away. Covering the major events here on campus, Alex is relishing her role as a student photographer within Coastal’s photography department. Fired up and ready to learn each day she reports for her office hours under campus photographer Judy Johns, Alex is setting herself up for a promising career.
It isn’t all about taking photos. Alex enjoys just being a Chanticleer. Stating that the “community among the students” is her favorite part of attending Coastal Carolina University, she has always felt a genuine connection with campus. With graduation looming, Alex is scoping out internships and starting to look at life post-Coastal. However, no matter where she goes to pursue her dream, her images from a magical summer in 2016 will forever live on.
