Jeremy Govan describes himself as a servant. He grew up in a household that stressed the importance of serving others and this lesson was not lost on him when he left his hometown of Greenville, Miss. However, it took him a while before he found the right place that would allow him to truly leave an impact on those around him.

“When I first came here I was completely nervous because it was four-year institution and I was coming from a two-year college,” explains Jeremy. “It was somewhat of a culture shock.”

But the culture shock would soon fade and the possibilities to make a difference would become more pronounced. As Jeremy settled in at CCU, he rediscovered his natural tendency to serve others. He became an orientation leader, a role that allowed him to work with a team and positively influence new students. This initial leadership opportunity opened his eyes and helped him become part of the Coastal Carolina community.

“CCU has exposed me to all different kinds of people, different leadership styles, different communication,” Jeremy says. “It has broadened my view of the world itself.”

With this enhanced view, Jeremy is making the most of his time at Coastal. Not only is he fulfilling his servant identity but he is enjoying himself as well. A dedicated outdoorsman, he is using the Grand Strand as his playground to do an assortment of recreational activities. He has also structured his time in a way that allows him to work as a student assistant at the Lib Jackson Student Union and to pursue his interest in anime.

Jeremy is studying communication and is focusing on the public relations side of the major. If a PR firm is looking for an honest and articulate individual who would truly serve the community in his role, Jeremy would be a great hire.

Jeremy's favorite professor is Deborah Breede, Ph.D.

Q&A with Jeremy

How did you hear about Coastal?: I was informed about Coastal Carolina by a close friend of mine.

Why did you come to Coastal?: I grew up in the Upstate of South Carolina. After graduating high school, I wanted to go back to Mississippi to take the junior college route. After graduating from junior college, I decided that I wanted to come back to South Carolina but not the Upstate region. I wanted to put a reasonable amount of distance between home and college. I was also searching for colleges that would recognize me as a member Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and offer scholarships for that. Coastal fit both of those options, so I signed up for my orientation. I fell in love with the campus during my orientation and a year and a half later here I am.

Favorite professor: Deborah Breede, Ph.D.

Favorite class: Communication Theory

Favorite aspect of Coastal?: I love that Coastal provides an array of services that improves and promotes the student life experience on campus.

Favorite aspect of living in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area?:  I appreciate the diverse terrains within the area that you can enjoy and adventure off into. For example: I can spend a weekend kayaking down a riverbank, exploring the marshes on campgrounds, going on a hiking trail or just relaxing on the beach.

Clubs/Intramurals/other extracurricular activities involved in?: I am a team leader for the 2019 Orientation Team and also part of Teal Nation Communication Student PR Agency.

Do you work anywhere currently (either on or off campus)?: I work on campus as a team leader in the Office of New Student and Family Programs assisting with orientation. I am also a student assistant in the Lib Jackson Student Union Building.

Plans after graduation?:  At the moment I am stuck between pursuing graduate school or jumping head first into my career field. I am setting myself up so that both options are available to me.

What are your hobbies?: I enjoy fitness, any type of art form and outdoor activities.

Bonus Info: I come from a household that promotes being of service to others. I have made it a point to carry on with that spirit into my young adult life. I am also a huge anime fan and probably read way more manga than I should.
