Name: Lauren Levesque
Hometown: North Kingston, R.I.
Year in School: Junior
Major: Special Education
While in high school, Lauren Levesque started working with special education students. It didn’t take long for her to realize how rewarding the opportunity was. Lauren knew that making an impact on this very important sector of society could translate into a fulfilling career. With a field of study now identified, she started researching schools. A certain university with an excellent education program in a perfect location ended up catching Lauren’s eye.
Making the long move from North Kingstown, R.I., to Conway, Lauren started to put her plan in motion. Aside from enrolling in the special education program, she extended herself in other ways that would help her reach her goal after graduating. For example, she became involved with the Chanticleer Center for Literacy Education, a publicly funded outreach resource to support students who need additional literacy instruction. She also started to volunteer at the Barnabas Horse Foundation, an equine-assisted therapy farm that serves many different groups, including those with special needs.
Although Lauren is actively preparing herself to land a special education job soon after graduating, she also finds time to engage in activities not directly tied to her desired career field. She is involved in Colleges Against Cancer and proudly states that her favorite moment at CCU was this past spring when the 2017 Relay for Life campaign netted over $100,000 in donations. With everything on her plate, she also holds a job, working at the Gap Outlet in Myrtle Beach.
A believer in treating others the way you would want to be treated, Lauren stresses that it is important to “spread the kindness.” As is clearly evident from her work with special education students and her time with Colleges Against Cancer, Lauren isn’t just providing lip service. We hope this selfless and motivated student enjoys the remainder of her time at Coastal.
