Although her college campus is just 20 miles from her hometown, attending Coastal Carolina University almost seemed like a different world from where Shelby Mullins grew up. A native of Aynor, S.C., Shelby says becoming a Chanticleer has allowed her to meet people from numerous different backgrounds, an opportunity that wasn’t readily available in her hometown.

“I have met people I never dreamed about meeting,” Shelby explains when discussing the diverse student body at Coastal.

The chance to meet fellow students from various places and backgrounds has left a positive impact on Shelby, much in the same way that her academic experience has. Recognizing her desire to organize, take initiative and lead, Shelby feels she hit the jackpot with her academic program.

“I felt business management was the best way to encompass all of my skills into one major,” Shelby says, revealing her course of study.

With her sights set on earning her MBA degree, Shelby knows that studying business management will help her tremendously once she completes her undergraduate work. In fact, she believes it will help her even before she walks across the HTC Center stage at commencement in 2020. It is Shelby’s goal to have her graduate school plans lined up and finalized before she graduates from Coastal.

A hard worker who holds jobs both on and off campus, Shelby’s work ethic will take her far. We are lucky to have landed this local product and we look forward to watching Shelby achieve her goals.

Q&A with Shelby

How did you hear about Coastal?: I grew up right down the road from CCU and my stepdad is a professor at Horry-Georgetown Technical College so I knew I would end up somewhere that allowed me to stay close to family.

Why did you come to Coastal?: Coastal offered the most scholarships for me and allowed me to keep my job I have in Myrtle Beach, instead of moving to a different city and having to get a new job.  The one thing that really sold me was that Coastal has so many cycle scholarships that give preference to people born and raised in Horry County like me. With so many out of state students it can feel like you’re in the minority being from South Carolina, but Coastal really makes us feel welcome.

Favorite professor: Hands down, Larry Smith, Ph.D.  He taught me more than just business communication; he taught me invaluable skills when it comes to interviewing for jobs and also how to interact with clients, coworkers and bosses once you do achieve your job.

Favorite class: Business calculus with Ogül Arslan, Ph.D..  Might sound weird, but I surprised myself in this class.  I was worried I would perform so badly, but ended up finishing the class with a high grade.  I showed myself that if I just put my mind to it I can achieve anything. Professor Arlsan is a wonderful teacher!

Favorite aspect of Coastal?: CHANT411.  I think I text them every single day. This is just one of Coastal’s many resources provided to students, but this one is my favorite because with such a big campus and a large student body, things can get lost in translation.

Favorite aspect of living in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area?: Am I predictable if I say the beach? I have lived here all my life, but constant access to the beach is something I never take for granted.

Clubs/Intramurals/other extracurricular activities involved in?: I am involved in Beta Gamma Sigma and National Society of Leadership and Success.

Do you work anywhere currently (either on or off campus)?: I work on campus and off campus.  On campus, I am a house manager for Ticketing and Patron Services and off campus I am a server at Red Lobster.

Plans after graduation?:  Graduate school! Hopefully a MBA  program somewhere up north.  Snow would be nice.

What are your hobbies?: I love to relax.  Between two jobs and being a full time student, any chance I get to relax I do.

Bonus Info: I am thankful for the opportunity to be part of #CCUfamily!  I have met so many people here who I remember forever.  Chants up!
