Twice as nice: CCU women's golf team wins Sun Belt Academic Championship, too
Following the tournament at the award ceremony April 17, Head Coach Katie Quinney accepted the trophy for Coastal Carolina as the women’s golf team received the Sun Belt Team Academic Championship.
The award is based on the team’s cumulative grade point average and is a true team award; all eight members of the women’s golf team have a grade point average above 3.0.
Stephanie Henning, Marie Lunackova and Malene Krolboll Hansen were all named to the Commissioner’s List for maintaining a GPA above 3.50 for the year.
The Chanticleers brought home the athletic title by shooting a five-over 289 in the final round of the Sun Belt Championship in Sandestin, Fla., on April 17, and it was the low score of the day. CCU finished the championship with a 20-over 872 (297-286-289), winning the event by 34 strokes over second-place Troy's +54 906 (300-306-300).
Hansen was the overall winner, but that honor was not decided until the final six holes. She had consecutive birdies on the 13th, 14th and 15th holes to open up a five-shot lead and ended the match with pars on 16, 17 and 18.
Following the tournament, Hansen, Lunackova and Sena Ersoy were named to the All-Tournament Team. As the Sun Belt champions, the Chants get an automatic berth in the NCAA Regionals May 7-9. The NCAA will announces where CCU will play during its selection show on April 25.
