Rocker Edwin McCain coming to Brooks Stadium

September 9, 2004

South Carolina rocker Edwin McCain will perform on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 8:30 p.m. in the first-ever concert at Brooks Stadium at Coastal Carolina University.

Tickets are on sale at Wheelwright Box Office for $10 general admission. The concert is part of Coastals Founders Day activities celebrating the universitys 50th anniversary.

The seeds for McCains blend of Southern soul and acoustic storytelling were planted some 20 years ago in Greenville, where he was born and raised, and where he was influenced by a wide range of music from the poetic songwriting of North Carolinian David Wilcox to the 70s soul of Earth, Wind & Fire. He began writing songs as a teenager, and after a semester at the University of South Carolina moved to Charleston where he began building a name for himself playing the citys bars, pubs and restaurants. It was there that he would befriend the members of Hootie & the Blowfish. Gigs with the band helped McCain sign with Lava/Atlantic. McCain and his band debuted with Honor Among Thieves, followed by 1997s Misguided Roses, Messenger in 1999 and Far From Over two years later, racking up platinum and gold albums thanks to popular singles such as Solitude and Ill Be.

After leaving Atlantic in 2001, McCain released The Austin Sessions in 2003 and Scream and Whisper earlier this summer. A new DVD is due out in November called Tinsel & Tap Shoes: Live at the House of Blues, set for release Nov. 16, featuring two new songs. McCain attended Coastal in the late 1980s.

For tickets, call the Wheelwright Box Office at 349-2502. In the event of heavy rain, the concert will be canceled and tickets refunded. No coolers or recording devices will be allowed into the stadium.
