BUDDHISM IN CLASSIC JAPANESE FILM SERIES: THE BURMESE HARP

Kon Ichikawa’s award-winning The Burmese Harp (1956) involves a Japanese platoon that surrenders to British forces in Burma in 1943. This film is shown in Japanese with English subtitles. Following the screening, Ron Green, professor and chair, and Dennis Earl, professor, both of CCU’s Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, lead a discussion on the film. The Burmese Harp is the third of three films in the Buddhism in Classic Japanese Film series.
