In George Bernard Shaw’s Arms and the Man, moonlight rises on a Bulgarian evening in 1885 when a chance encounter between a disheveled soldier fleeing the fight and a young lady awaiting the return of her heroic fiancé from the Serbo-Bulgarian War erupts in crackling wit, irony and charm. First produced in 1894 at the Avenue Theatre in London, England, this romantic comedy pokes fun at the dangers of bravado in battle and idealistic notions of love. Directed by Monica Bell, CCU Department of Theatre chair and associate professor.
