Academic Coaching is a focused, one-on-one meeting between the student and the coach that centers on the process of learning.
Though not an accommodation nor is it mandatory, Academic Coaching is an extra layer of support that Accessibility and Disability Services has to offer. It is up to the student to decide if they want to participate in coaching. Meetings can take place once at the beginning of each semester, weekly, bi-weekly or monthly.
With a professional coach, students will examine their learning styles, identify academic strengths, weaknesses, and learning barriers to create a tailored action plan to help students reach their academic goals. Academic Coaching teaches accountability and advocacy while promoting self-confidence and independence.
Topics covered in Academic Coaching are:
- Goal setting
- Organizational skills
- Note-taking strategies
- Test-taking skills
- Reducing test anxiety
- Learning and study strategies
In addition to discussing these topics, students may also use Academic Coaching as a time to work on homework and prepare for exams.
