Board of Visitors
The Spadoni College of Education Board of Visitors is an organization of business, education, professional, and community leaders who contribute their time, talents, and resources to the College for the purpose of strengthening the work of the College in such areas as program development, program delivery, faculty development, and service.

An important additional purpose of the Board is to help strengthen the partnership between the business community and the faculty and students of the College and to represent the goals of the Board, the College, and Coastal Carolina University to the local, state, regional and national community. The Board consists of ten to twenty-five members nominated by the Board’s Nominating/By-Laws Committee who meet quarterly on behalf of the College. Shirley L. Butler is Associate Vice-President for Academic Affairs at Horry-Georgetown Technical College in Conway, South Carolina. Dr. Butler has worked in Higher Education for over 20 years, having served in various capacities including College Recruiter, Director of Career Development and Counseling, Assistant Dean of Student Services, Campus Provost, V-P of Continuing Education, and currently Associate V-P of Academic Affairs at Horry-Georgetown Technical College. She has had extensive experience in administration, student affairs, and academic leadership, and has also worked in human services and in real estate and construction management. An active member of Grand Strand Baptist Church, past President of the S. C. Chapter of the American Association of Women in Community Colleges, and a member of several advisory councils, Dr. Butler is married, has one son, and has lived in the Grand Strand area for over twenty years.
Nora Mason is the Marketing Director and Community Relations Manager for Costco Wholesale at the Myrtle Beach warehouse. Originally from northern Virginia, she moved to Myrtle Beach in 2004 with her husband Rob, real estate agent and leader of Plantation Realty Group, along with their two teenage children. She has worked for Costco Wholesale since 1988, holding various management positions, and joined the Spadoni College of Education Board of Visitors in 2009 to offer her insight as a business leader.
Michelle T. Richardson is an eighteen year veteran teacher in Horry County schools, having taught kindergarten, 4th grade, and Child Development, as well as winning Teacher of the Year for Aynor Elementary School (2009-10) and Horry County (2010-11). Richardson is an alumnus of Aynor High School as well as a graduate of Coastal Carolina University with a BA in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. She earned National Board Certification in 2007 and a Masters degree in Technology Curriculum and Instruction in 2009. She is married to Robert Richardson and has three sons.
Dr. Muriel O'Tuel is a highly acclaimed author and keynote speaker who inspires her listeners to leave positive footprints on the hearts of others. She has presented at many state, regional and international conventions and was selected as an international speaker to Costa Rica and Oslo, Norway. Dr. O'Tuel has been a member of the educational group, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, since 1981, serving as chapter president and representing the organization on various state committees. Dr. O'Tuel earned her BA degree in English from St. Andrews Presbyterian College in North Carolina; a master's degree in counseling from the University of Alabama; and a Ph.D. in counselor education and psychology from the University of South Carolina. Dr. O'Tuel has taught at all levels from elementary school through university. In various school districts she served as director of guidance, director of staff development, and director of psychological services. Her most recent assignment was assistant superintendent in the Myrtle Beach area schools, one of South Carolina's largest and fastest growing school districts. Her book FOOTPRINTS ON THE HEART was nominated for the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Educator's Award. She is currently working on her second book, HEARTPRINTS ARE FOREVER, which deals with aging, generational differences, and leaving a positive legacy.
Gwen Ward was born in Conway and lived in Myrtle Beach for about 25 years. Presently, she is the work based learning coordinator for Berkeley County School District. She graduated from Winthrop University and earned a master's degree from Coastal Carolina. She continued her education at the Citadel and the College of Charleston. She taught marketing/merchandising in four counties in South Carolina including Horry County at the Grand Strand Career Center. She was an adjunct professor with the Citadel for two classes involving career development. She is an active member of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce (serving on several committees), Low Country Manufacturers Council Workforce Committee, Rotary Club of Moncks Corner (officer), Kiwanis Club of Moncks Corner (officer). She is also active with her professional organizations, SCACTE and ACTE, and has served as an officer in all positions with SCACTE, including state president. She also comments, "I am honored to serve on the BOV for CCU."
