To prepare learners to be competitive in our global economy, teachers must possess a deep understanding of what it means to be literate and have a toolbox of instructional strategies for developing their students’ reading and writing abilities. With the support of Coastal Carolina University and the Spadoni College of Education, literacy program faculty offer a literacy concentration track within the Master of Education in Language, Literacy, and Culture degree. This concentration provides teachers the opportunity to earn an additional certification - Literacy Teacher and Literacy Coach from the South Carolina Department of Education and to fulfill all requirements for the Read to Succeed endorsements mandated by recent legislation in our state. The 33 hour degree program requires 15 credit hours in foundation courses (all online) and 18 credit hours in literacy concentration courses (offered all online). Interactive experiences with students from our local community within the CCLE are embedded into the coursework to meet the requirements set forth by the South Carolina Department of Education. Candidates who choose so may complete the same practicums as those who are participating in the Chanticleer Center for Literacy Education, but those experiences take place in the teachers' respective local communities. Video recording of practicum experiences are submitted to the professors on campus to provide supervised feedback.
Coastal Carolina University also offers classes that are required for South Carolina ESOL add-on certificate. These classes are taught on-line. Currently, these classes are offered only at the graduate level, online. For more information about the classes and when they are offered please follow the program link.
