The Coastal Carolina English Department is home to a nationally recognized online literary journal, Waccamaw, and publishes the Paul Rice Poetry Broadside Series. Since 2008, Waccamaw has published two issues per year, featuring original work by such renowned authors as Jack Gilbert, Kevin Wilson, Barbara Hamby, R. T. Smith, and Natasha Trethewey. The Paul Rice Poetry Broadside Series features poems by Coastal Carolina students selected in a contest held each fall and spring semester. The winning poem in each contest is published on a beautifully designed broadside in an edition of 100 numbered copies.
The English Department also sponsors annual First-Year Writing Awards for the best student writing produced in English 101, 102, and 211 courses. Winners of these awards have their essays published as exemplary work in the following year’s First-Year Composition Guide published by the department.
Additional publication opportunities for students include Bridges, Coastal Carolina’s online journal of undergraduate research; Tempo, the university’s bi-annual variety magazine; Archarios, CCU’s annual arts & literature journal; and The Chanticleer, the student newspaper. Tempo and Archarios have frequently won national awards for design and quality among student publications.
