Current catalog description:
ENGR 399 Q* - Integrated Science and Design (1 to 3 credits). (Prereq: permission of the instructor and approved contract) In this independent study course, students take concepts of their choosing learned in advanced applied science elective courses and use an engineering approach to either design a solution to a problem integrating those science principles, or study in depth an existing engineering solution. This student experience serves as a bridge between mathematics, the basic sciences and engineering practice. This course may be repeated up to three credit hours. F, S, Su.
Proposed catalog description, in the present tense, including prefix, number, title, (credits), (prerequisites), (co-requisites), course description, and semesters offered. Catalog description should be exactly as it is to appear in the catalog.:
ENGR 399 Q - Integrated Science and Design (2 credits). (Prereq: Senior status or permission of the instructor and approved contract) In this first of the two-course capstone sequence, students initiate culminating major engineering design projects. Projects can be developed from experiential opportunities, using concepts learned in foundational science, engineering science and advanced elective courses and/or a contemporary community problem. Students will use the engineering design approach to identify, formulate the specific problem under consideration and propose solutions by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics. F, S, Su.

What research has led to this request?
The program's accrediting body, ABET, revised and updated their student learning outcomes and curriculum requirements effective this academic year. As a new program going for initial accreditation in 2020, the revisions necessitated a significant redesign of the Engineering Science program's major requirements, pattern of course offerings, and required and elective courses. A significant program outcome is to prepare graduates for professional licensure. A gap analysis was performed against ABET’s new curricular requirements as well as the latest content of the relevant license exams and the creation of several new courses was warranted, with subsequent accommodating adjustments to existing courses. This course request addresses the fact that when the Engineering Science program was new, enrollments were small and only isolated students would reach the capstone phase in the program. Currently, as larger cohorts are approaching upper division course work, it is an important time to reorganize the Senior Design experience to batch students into teams. This is a critical experience in their professional development, as few real engineering firms employ engineers working on projects in isolation. The organizational change is also necessary to comply with industry and ABET expectations about what graduates would experience in a capstone project. Therefore, this course has been moved out of the role of a flexible independent study and realized as the fixed entry to the Senior Design project. A lab fee is also requested which will be used to solicit matching support from external corporate sponsored projects. See attachments for details.
What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?
The main impact of the change will be positive. From an operational standpoint, the change is critically necessary; as large cohorts move into the senior year, the program of one-faculty/one-student capstone projects will not scale up. It is necessary for students to experience extended engineering design works in teams and for program faculty to best utilize their mentoring activity.
What financial costs are associated with this request?
A new lab fee $250 is requested for addition. Currently, only ENGR 499 has a lab fee $150 and this is the only regular funding source for capstone projects which is insufficient. In the new curriculum, the lab fee will be added to both courses in the capstone sequence (ENGR 399 + ENGR 499) and double as a financial constraint, a necessary component of ABET learning outcomes for design work, for students in their project.
If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?
The course is already taught outside of regular load and compensated with credit banking. It is possible that in the next 2-3 years, a classroom component of the course will be instituted and taught in load by a single instructor (a capstone coordinator), but at the present, this change will not create new teaching loads.
