What research has led to this request?
The program's accrediting body, ABET, revised and updated their student learning outcomes and curriculum requirements effective this academic year. As a new program going for initial accreditation in 2020, the revisions necessitated a significant redesign of the Engineering Science program's major requirements, pattern of course offerings, and required and elective courses. A significant program outcome is to prepare graduates for professional licensure. A gap analysis was performed against ABET’s new curricular requirements as well as the latest content of the relevant license exams and the creation of several new courses was warranted, with subsequent accommodating adjustments to existing courses. The creation of an engineering specific internship course is an important step in building a menu of opportunities for students to obtain work experience with potential future employers and critical for the Engineering Science program to meet industry and ABET expectations about engineering graduates. A Engineering Internship of 3 credit hours is therefore required by all program graduates, but also may be repeated for up to a total of 12 hours, as part of the student's satisfaction of the Professional Enhancements requirement. See attachments for details.
What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?
The main impacts will be positive as students will be able to obtain substantial course credits, work experience and job skills development through cooperative education with a wide variety of on- and off-campus internship providers, depending on the student's interests.
What financial costs are associated with this request?
None.
If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?
This course is already outside of load for the faculty instructor of record and is compensated through credit banking. This will be continue to the case for the foreseeable future.
Additional Information
For external entities, like industrial partners, who are the internship provider, it will be necessary to coordinate the internship instantiation with Career Services. Specifically, a CCU Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) must exist between the University and internship provider prior to the student registering for course credit.
