Explanation:
A lab fee change from $150/student to $250/student is requested. Currently, only ENGR 499 has a lab fee $150 and this is the only regular funding source for capstone projects which is insufficient. In the new curriculum, the lab fee will be added to both courses in the capstone sequence (ENGR 399 + ENGR 499) and double as a financial constraint, a necessary component of ABET learning outcomes for design work, for students in their project.

Current catalog description:
ENGR 499 Q - Senior Design (3 credits). (Prereq: permission of the instructor) Students will engage in a structured project either under the direction of a faculty member, via an external internship, or through a project of their own design with instructor permission. This major design experience serves to integrate the knowledge and skills that students have developed in earlier course work through the completion of an original project. Students will be required to utilize project management principles throughout the experience and develop a detailed report to be presented both orally in a public forum and in written form. F, S.
Proposed catalog description, in the present tense, including prefix, number, title, (credits), (prerequisites), (co-requisites), course description, and semesters offered. Catalog description should be exactly as it is to appear in the catalog.:
ENGR 499 Q - Senior Design (2 credits). (Prereq: ENGR 399Q or permission of the instructor) In this second of the two-course capstone sequence, students incorporate appropriate engineering standards and multiple constraints into their developing project. Students apply the engineering design approach to produce solutions that meet specific client needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors. This major design experience serves to integrate the knowledge and skills that students have developed in earlier course work through the completion of an original project. Students will be required to utilize project management principles throughout the experience and develop a detailed report to be presented both orally in a public forum and in written form. What research has led to this request?
The program's accrediting body, ABET, revised and updated their student learning outcomes and curriculum requirements effective this academic year. As a new program going for initial accreditation in 2020, the revisions necessitated a significant redesign of the Engineering Science program's major requirements, pattern of course offerings, and required and elective courses. A significant program outcome is to prepare graduates for professional licensure. A gap analysis was performed against ABET’s new curricular requirements as well as the latest content of the relevant license exams and the creation of several new courses was warranted, with subsequent accommodating adjustments to existing courses. This course request addresses the fact that when the Engineering Science program was new, enrollments were small and only isolated students would reach the capstone phase in the program. Currently, as larger cohorts are approaching upper division course work, it is an important time to reorganize the Senior Design experience to batch students into teams. This is a critical experience in their professional development, as few real engineering firms employ engineers working on projects in isolation. The organizational change is also necessary to comply with industry and ABET expectations about what graduates would experience in a capstone project. Therefore, this course has been moved out of the role of a flexible independent study and realized as the fixed end point to the Senior Design project. See attachments for details.
What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?
The main impact of the change will be positive. Students will tackle capstone projects in larger cohorts, in teams of 3-5, rather than in isolation, as was the case in the old curriculum when the course was managed more like independent study. This will enable the curriculum to treat the required ABET outcome that students be able to function effectively in teams. The lab fee change (discussed below) will greatly support the acquisition of equipment and supplies enabling more complex problems to be addressed in projects and higher quality deliverables (prototypes, experimental data, etc.) to be produced.
What financial costs are associated with this request?
A lab fee change from $150 to $250 is requested for increase. Currently, only ENGR 499 has a lab fee $150 and this is the only regular funding source for capstone projects which is insufficient. In the new curriculum, the lab fee will be added to both courses in the capstone sequence and double as a financial constraint, a necessary component of ABET learning outcomes for design work, for students in their project. This fee will also be used to solicit matching support from external corporate sponsored projects.
If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?
