ENGL 356 - Introduction to Semantics (3 credits) (Prereq: ENGL 101 and ENGL 102 with a grade of 'C' or better) This course introduces the systematic study of semantics, focusing on the representation of meaning at the lexical level. This course covers ways of describing meaning (sense and reference, computational analysis and prototype theory), ways of organizing meaning (the mental lexicon, connotation and euphemism, linguistic relativity), and ways of applying these concepts to sort predicates by argument structure patterns. The department has created new tracks through the major including one focusing on Linguistics. This course is the only course focusing on the construction of meaning and has importance for all students taking the Linguistics and Rhetoric track.

It will enhance the offerings in the English department and provide a richer experience for those going through this track.
