What research has led to this request?
All Marine Science majors are required to take MATH 160 and MATH 161. As a result, some students are testing straight into MATH 160 (Calculus I), and therefore have not met the current course pre-requisite for this elective (MATH 131, Trigonometry). The math requirement was in place to ensure that students are progressing through the program, and so requiring MATH 160 as a co-requisite should still meet that desired outcome while avoiding the need to sign in students who took calculus as their first college math course. A grade of C or better in all pre or corequisites will reduce the possibility that students will enter the class without at least average mastery of the necessary skills for success.
What impact will this request have on existing academic programs?
This request should have minimal impact, as we are currently signing in students who have MATH 160 but not MATH 131. The addition of C or better will ensure that students taking this upper level elective have at least average mastery of necessary skills for success.
What financial costs are associated with this request?
None.
If NO change in cost is anticipated, how is this possible?
This course is already being taught, and will continue to be offered with the same frequency. This change only affects course pre-requisites.
