Craig Boylstein, associate professor of sociology, joined the Coastal Carolina University faculty in Fall 2008. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1997 and 1999, respectively, and a doctorate from the University of Florida in 2002.

He is the author or co-author of 14 peer-reviewed scientific publications (e.g., Sociology of Health and Illness, Symbolic Interaction, Journal of Gerontology, Journal of Aging Studies, Organization Studies), and has served as a co-investigator on four federally-funded research projects, assisting in grant preparation and submittal in the area of qualitative and quantitative assessment of physical rehabilitation. Prior to his arrival at Coastal Carolina University, he served as associate investigator/health research scientist at the Rehabilitation Outcomes Research Center (Veterans Affairs Center of Excellence) in Gainesville, Fla. During that time, he also served as adjunct faculty in the Department of Sociology at the University of Florida.

His research focuses on qualitative and triangulation methodologies, survey construction and building conceptual frameworks of chronic illness.

His areas of expertise include medical sociology (how narratives help to structure the experience of living with chronic illness) and how organizations use language and imagery to link themselves to larger social-consumer culture.
