Sharon H. Thompson, professor of health promotion, joined the Coastal Carolina University faculty in 1991. She earned a bachelor's degree in plant sciences from Clemson University. She also earned a master's degree in community education, an educational specialist degree in educational administration as well as a doctorate degree in health education, all from the University of South Carolina.
Thompson was named the South Carolina Governor's Professor of the Year in 2008. She received the Distinguished Teacher-Scholar Lecturer Award at Coastal Carolina University in 2004, the Excellence in Community Nutrition Award from the Dannon Institute in 2003 and The Sun News Volunteer of the Year Award for 2003-2004. In 1997, she was named the South Carolina Health Professional of the Year by the South Carolina Association for the Advancement of Health Education (SCAAHE).
She has presented and published scholarly papers in local, state and national venues. She a member of the Claire Chapin Epps YMCA Board of Directors, a deacon for First Presbyterian Church in Myrtle Beach, a Core Advisory Group board member for the S.C. Campaign to Prevent Teenage Pregnancy, and is the director of the Swain Scholar program for the College of Science.
