Susan Slavik


Art education, study abroad

Susan Slavik, associate professor of art, joined the Coastal Carolina University faculty in 1998. She earned a Ph.D. from Florida State University.

Slavik taught art in Livonia, Mich., at public schools and served as an adjunct professor at Eastern Michigan University and Henry Ford Community College prior to Coastal.

She was awarded a Getty Center for Education in the Arts Doctoral Fellowship in 1992 and received Florida Institute for Art Education fellowships in 1989, 1990 and 1991.

Slavik served as the director of the Curriculum Leadership in the Arts Summer Institute at Coastal Carolina University from 2000 to 2003, visual arts coordinator of the Summer Arts Academy in 2002, 2003, 2006 and 2007, and university supervisor for graduate and undergraduate art education students since 1998. She has led travel/study programs to Italy, Barcelona and Northern Spain, and Athens and the Greek Islands.

In 2001 she received the Outstanding Performance in Higher Education Award from the South Carolina Art Education Association, and in 2005, she was selected as the Higher Education Division Teacher of the Year. The SCAEA nominated Slavik for the 2007 NAEA Higher Education Art Educator of the Year.
