Fredanna M'Cormack McGough is the chair of the Department of Health Sciences and is an associate professor of public health at Coastal Carolina University (CCU) in Conway, S.C. Originally from Sierra Leone, McGough lived in Nigeria and Kenya before coming to the United States to pursue an undergraduate degree at the University of North Florida. McGough went on to complete both her masters and doctoral studies from Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) in Carbondale, Ill. In the fall of 2008, McGough joined the faculty at Coastal Carolina University (CCU).
McGough embodies the teacher-scholar model; she incorporates her research and community work into the classroom. Her teaching responsibilities include human sexuality, womenÃƒï¿½Ã¯Â¿Â½Ãƒï¿½Ã‚Â¢Ãƒï¿½Ã‚Â¯Ãƒï¿½Ã‚Â¿Ãƒï¿½Ã‚Â½Ãƒï¿½Ã‚Â¯Ãƒï¿½Ã‚Â¿Ãƒï¿½Ã‚Â½s health, nutrition and global health perspectives. Her research interests focus on addressing social injustices, tackling social inequities and exploring socio-ecological factors that affect health care access, sexual and reproductive health autonomy, and maternal health outcomes.
McGough is involved with community agencies locally and internationally. Locally, she is involved with the Women and Gender Studies Program at CCU as an affiliate faculty member and currently sits on the boards of the Palmetto Works Community Development Center and the Cochran Community Education Center, both in Conway, S.C. Internationally, McGough is on the board of Social Workers Sierra Leone, and she developed the Bele Uman Project to address the accessibility needs of pregnant women in Sierra Leone.
