Biography
Michael Pierce, Associate professor and Chair of the Department of Biology, joined the Coastal Carolina University faculty in 2005. He earned a bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University in 1992 and a Ph.D. in
biochemistry from the University of Texas Health Science Center at SanmAntonio in 2000. Pierce's research interests are focused towards an understanding of a unique class of pathogens known as prions. Prions, or infectious proteins, are the causative agent of a family of fatal
neurodegenerative diseases, the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, which include Cruetzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) in humans and Mad Cow disease in cattle. Infectious prions have also been identified in the single celled organism, Saccharomyces cerevisiae (yeast) and an understanding of yeast prions has led to a more detailed understanding of the molecular events that result in prion diseases.
