Marlena Ryba, assistant professor of psychology, joined the Coastal Carolina University faculty in 2017. She earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 2014 from the University of Tennessee and completed her clinical psychology internship at the Jefferson County Internship Consortium in Louisville, Ky. From 2014 to 2017, she completed her postdoctoral training in the Department of Psychology at The Ohio State University.
Ryba's primary interests are in psychopathology, specifically depression; psychosocial aspects of cancer; and treatment outcome research. She has specialty training in behavioral medicine with specific expertise in oncology. In prior work, as the postdoctoral researcher on a NIH-funded grant, Marlena Ryba conducted research related to psychosocial interventions and behavioral medicine. She managed a multisite collaborative research study that aimed to disseminate a biobehavioral treatment for cancer patients. She trained more than 90 mental health professionals to implement this evidence-based treatment and directed the subsequent research.
Currently, she is investigating an online psychotherapy for cancer patients with depression.
