Richard Costner, associate professor of education, joined the Coastal Carolina University faculty in 2003. He earned a bachelor's degree in recreation management in 1986 and a master's degree in middle grades education in 1998, both from Appalachian State University. He also earned a Ph.D. in curriculum and teaching from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2003 and middle grades teacher certification credentials at the University of North Carolina at Asheville in 1995, where he won the Post-Baccalaureate Research Award for outstanding classroom-based research.
Costner taught language arts for five years in North Carolina. He serves on the Coastal Carolina University Faculty Senate and on the Student Retention and Assessment Committee.
His areas of expertise include elementary classroom management and motivation and the impact of mentoring at-risk youth.
